What are the best running shoes for a heavy (220lbs) runner who is also a pronator?

I am currently running in a pair of Brooks Beast that have performed well, but I am wondering what else is out there? I just started running again after 17 years, so I need more motion and stabilty control than high mileage or speed.

If you have health insurance, go see a Podiatrist (not an Orthopedist). I have pretty bad pronation but I didn't know it and thought the pain was from an old injury. I went to an Orthopedist because my knee hurt in addition to my ankles and feet. He put me on stationary bike for a hour a couple times a week and billed my insurance company. Didn't work at all. Finally I went to a podiatrist, he took an x-ray, a plaster cast of my feet, and two weeks later I had custom insoles ($495 out of pocket, ouch) but no more pain anywhere. I can-not recommend it enough.
Reply:I also use Brooks and their wonderful but unfortunately there are only a few others that manufacture high quality motion control shoes other than Brooks. You might want to consider Mizuno or simply pose your question to road runner sports, a specialized store catering to runners. They might suggest purchasing some inserts if you have not already taken this route. Another alternative is seeing an orthopedic doctor that would assist in designing a specific insert for your shoes. My last suggestion is to purchase several shoes and alternate both your shoes and running surfaces (grass, pavement and dirt surfaces). By alternating both you improve the mileage of your shoes as well as reduce the amount of damage to your knees and other joints. Hope this helps.
