What are the best running shoes for someone who is 20 pounds overweight?

You need to go to a store that specializes in running (not just a general sports store). They will watch you walk and see how your foot moves and recommend a number of different shoes. You then try all those shoes on to see which feels the most comfortable as you walk/jog throughout the store. Nobody can recommend their running shoe to you, because everybody moves differently. It's amazing the difference getting fitted for shoes will make!

New Balance. This is what the Marine Corps issues to recruits at Paris Island. They have had more than a few overweight recruits come through. Thats what they issued me in 1992, and I still run in new balance shoes to this day. Never had a problem with their shoes wearing out, or any foot pain associated with running in these shoes. I am glad to see there are other posters who agree with my statement. Being on your feet all day is hard and having a good shoe is important. I tried Nike, Reebok, etc. and the New Balance held up better than them.

Reply:You are going to want a shoe for heavy runners, who as a group tend to overpronate. Brooks Beast or Ascics Gel Kayano. Go take a look at www.roadrunnersports.com for a complete list. They have a great selection of all of the major brands and good descriptions of the shoes. I would not buy a shoe from them if you have not run in it before. Buy a shoe locally first. When you find a shoe that you like, you can save some money ordering from RRS.
