Is it bad to wear running shoes while playing tennis?

I do'nt play that often, so didn't want to buy separate shoes.

Is it bad to wear running shoes while playing tennis?
Yes, it's bad both for you and the shoes.

Tennis shoes with flat soles are sturdier and support the feet %26amp; ankles better for the movements of playing tennis. If you don't play tennis that often you can wear the tennis shoes casually as well if they are a nice simple pair.

Running shoes with ridged soles may be good for running and uneven terrain but on a tennis court the shoes get chewed up pretty quickly as my nephew found out from wearing his $100 Nike running shoes for tennis 3 or 4 times having left his tennis shoes at school in his locker.

Plus they don't support the foot %26amp; ankle for the sudden stops and quick turns and sideways movement.

You don't need to spend a lot but do try to get a pair of tennis shoes for tennis and you may just find that you enjoy tennis so much that they will get lots of wear.
Reply:Running shoes do not give support to side-to-side movements. If you play hard, be careful to avoid twisting your ankle..
Reply:you can buy one cheap and high quality tennis shoes, try this link: http://www.anpshoes.com
Reply:i think the primary difference is they dont have the same support for sideways motion. If you dont play often and as long as their not marking soles it should be okay.
Reply:running shoes are fine!!...just the court might wear out your shoes if you do it too much
Reply:do not use running shoes in Tennis...if u do so u have greater chances of injuring ur ankle..coz regular shoes do not provide the support required by ankles in Fast Tennis.

also they will wear out..the no. of days u play is less and even if u play just for fun
Reply:Tennis shoes are much more stable for your feet. It is harder to roll your ankles with tennis shoes than running shoes.
Reply:Nothing is wrong with it :D
Reply:It shouldn't be too bad if you play often. But buying a pair of tennis shoes could improve your game with more support around the ankle instead of the heel. This also makes it less likely to roll your ankle which may prevent injury. Also, the running shoes may scuff up and damage the courts.
Reply:i have played with running shoes and i do play a lot of tennis. it doesn't have that much support so i feel like i'm always falling over when i stop from running after the ball....plus, i've changed so many running shoes because they get ripped easily. you can run on them front and back....but tennis requires you to run sideways too....running shoes aren't meant for that.
Reply:It's not bad, although I play competitive tennis and have been playing for quite sometime, I don't mind playing with running shoes.

Sure, tennis shoes might help your performance, but if you're just looking for recreational tennis, then running shoes are fine too.

Nothing harmful about them.
Reply:because you dont play that often its not really that important that you buy tennis shoes but... it might be a good idea just to buy a cheap pair for when you do. they provide more support then running shoes and depending on what surface you play on, the soul (bottom) of the running shoe may effect the court.
Reply:it kinda depends on what you mean u dont play that often...if u play like once a month...and just for fun...not much running about...then its perfectly fine...

but running shoes isnt good for playing tennis..the softer sole compound is just gonna get grinded off the tennis court surface...

your ankles wont be sufficiently protected...in tennis theres a lot of sudden sprinting and braking...running shoes...isnt meant for sudden stops...so its gonna be bad for you luv...

but then like i said...if ur not serious bout tennis...and you just go out there to hit a few shots...for fun...not much running then its ok...

cheers and take care
Reply:Tennis shoes help keep your ankles sturdy. They decrease the chance of sprained/hurt ankles from playing fast pace, hard tennis. If you're not playing at a fast pace I think it's fine, but tennis a.k.a court shoes are really the best way to go for a tennis player.
Reply:it isn't terrible but running shoes are designed to move fowad and backward

tennis shoes are designed to move foward backward lft right ect.

you can find a good pair cheap enough if you find yourself playing more often

i got my pair at the sports authority for $40
Reply:yes it is bad for you, the court and the shoes (but mostly you).

with most running shoes, the bulk of the cushioning is in the heel, which works for running just fine since most ppl come down on their heels. but for tennis, you should put more weight on the balls of your feet, not your heel. also, if you drag you toe a couple of times with the running shoe, you will be able to actually see you toe through the shoe.

if you're playing on a public court, no one (including we hardcore public court players) cares about marks on the courts (as long as we don't catch no little punks rollerblading/ skateboarding on the courts); however, there are alot of places that wouldn't let you on their courts with these shoes. so if a friend ever invited you to a place like this, they wouldn't let you on the court with them (and they will ask!).

my wife played in running shoes for a while and broke down and got some tennis shoes because her feet were killing her and the shoes were getting pretty trashed.

think of it like this: if you don't play that often, they should last a long time!
Reply:If you play rough or hard in tennis wearing running shoes, you may roll your ankle. Also it may not be good for the court. However, if it is recreational or casual play, it shouldn't really matter, you can play with it fine. Either way, if you are careful, its fine.
